2008 flim "Blindness"

The film "Blindness" (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861689 has created controversy. It depicts victims of a blindness epidemic descending into madness. After being afflicted with the "blindness" disease, the characters begin to act like they are unable to perform every-day actions and the city soon spirals into chaos.
The blind community is upset with this portrayal of blind individuals. I believe that this is rightfully so. It seems that recently a slew of epidemic films have risen to popularity. "Outbreak" (1995) and "28 Days Later" (2002) are two films in which an epidemic causes cities to lose control of civility and chaos insues.
I feel as if the makers of this film did not even consider that blindess is something that people deal with every day without living in chaos. It is almost as if they did not realize that blindness is a common affliction and a disability which individuals have created systems, like American sign language, to help overcome the symptoms.
I hope that the controversy surrounding this film will help media producers from making the same mistake in the future.
